Matthew 7:1-2
"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you."
This is definitely a heavily quoted verse, most commonly weaponized to stop someone from being told they are out of line with biblical teaching. This verse is twisted into a command that Christians cannot correct the actions of anyone.
Jesus is not actually saying, don’t judge. He’s saying you have to live by the standards you are using to judge others because the consequences of your judgment is being held to that standard.
This verse comes after passages where Jesus has been calling out the hypocrisy of the Jewish religious leaders who turned religion into a display based on their pride and seeking of other’s approval instead of a humble and grateful worship of God.
From that arrogant place, passing judgement as if you are God is a dangerous place. That is what Jesus is waring about—using religion as a weapon to esteem yourself and belittle others.
If instead you are sharing biblical principles that you also abide by for correction from love, and you are keeping your heart and mind centered on God, then that is how God calls us to live.
Adjustment: Live for God, staying humble, guided by the truth of the Word.
